PILOT’S LIFE IN INDIAN AIRFORCE

When we think about a pilot in defence organization, we portray man in blue proudly holding ranks on his/her shoulder, badges and commendations glorifying a uniform personnel. It’s not as simple the way it sounds. A pilot earns his/her dress and badges after completing his tenacious training of 2-3 years. This practice is provided to adapt defence environment is like exercising penance.

1. A pilot’s day starts quite early when he gets ready to reach his airbase accordingly and attends the briefing followed by post briefing which includes preparing himself for the flight such as wearing G-suit and oxygen masks etc.

2. By the other half of the day pilot goes to officers’ mess for lunch and returns to his squadron. Evenings are relaxing with a game of squash or so. Parties fall quiet an often during weekends.

3. The cockpit of defence aircraft isn’t like other commercial plane’s cockpit. It is very compact and narrow which is usually not comfortable. It has a complete closure and pilot flies on given instructions and instruments like radio and radar only in fighter planes like SU-MK1, MIRAGE etc.

4. Flying requires skill which comes with prolong practice and perfect knowledge. There are bigger aircrafts like IL-76/78, AN-32 and HERCULES which start on APUs are usually used for load carrying and refueling in air. They come with larger space and man power.

5. The salary starts from a lakh including all allowances with free medical facilities for self, family and dependent. They enjoy their post for at least 20 years (depends on personal choice) and pension for life long.

6. Medical check-ups are strictly followed. Every single ailment is watched carefully and treated for the welfare of Pilot. A smallest of injury is taken care with complete attention.

7. The families are benefited with medical facilities, schools and shopping complex in order to provide all facilities under one roof in an Air force station.

8. Air force Wives Welfare Association is made for wives of the Air force personnel who carry out various welfare projects.

9. There are risks while flying and aircraft are machines after all. But a risk is worth for serving nation.

WHY GARUN COMMANDOS ARE MOST POWERFUL MEN IN UNIFORM

The unit Garun Commando was formed and founded in September2004 as a Special Forces Unit of the Indian Air Force. The name Garun is derived from Hindu mythology which is a legendary, humanoid, divine bird that symbolizes impulsive fierce strength and belligerent excellence. The commandos go through a very hard training which makes them match up the expectations. Combat Search and Rescue, Reconnaissance, Counter Insurgency (COIN) Operations and Emergency to counter the terrorist attacks over different air bases.

Though Army has provided Special Force Units to Air Force, but Army handles their recruitment and posting as per their requirement. So it was a necessity to have a Special Force Unit within the Air Force to carry out mentioned operations. Finally by September 2003, a potential force of 1080 strong Airmen were authorized to be brought up in the same way as Army’s Para Commandos and Navy’s MACROS. The selected Airmen ‘Y’ group goes for further vigorous physical training.

Growing into a Garun Commando and holding up the maroon beret sounds awesome but it is not a piece of cake. It is toilsome that takes around 72 weeks which is the largest time span taken to train any Indian Special Forces.

1. The initial training starts at Airmen Training Centre at Belgaum, Karnataka. The probationary period of initial three months decides their caliber and approach.

2. The next stage starts with high level of attrition, are sent forward for next stage i.e. Parachute Training School (PTS), Agra for airborne training.

3. The next phase of training takes them to Army’s Counter Insurgency and Jungle Warfare School in Mizoram. It trains them in intensive experience in counter insurgency operations.

4. The Final stage of training deploys the commandos to Indian Army’s Para Commandos which helps them to get a first-hand experience in various military operations.

The commandos are geared up destructive and noxious weapons make them invincible and bravest of all. Passing all these levels and phases is not an easy task, it takes a lot courage and strength to reach and earn the uniform. That’s why WHY GARUN COMMANDOS ARE MOST POWERFUL MEN IN UNIFORM.
